Whenever Apple announces a new iPhone

Whenever Apple announces a new iPhone, people line up to hear what the company has to say. And in more recent years the same has started happening for Samsung’s Galaxy line of handsets. But this time around, competitors are trying to steal Samsung’s thunder by advertising around, or even turning up to the events.

For the Galaxy S4 reveal yesterday in New York, Apple gave interviews, LG took out an ad in Times Square, but HTC went a step further and sent a team to the event. They didn’t want to go inside and check out the S4, instead they were interested in the big queue of press representatives outside the Radio City Music Hall waiting to get in.

HTC doesn’t want anyone to buy a Galaxy S4, they would prefer you have a HTC One in your pocket. So they turned up with the HTC One ready to demo, but also brought along hot drinks and most importantly, $100 coupons.

It’s a bold move that’s clearly grabbing headlines, but it’s the coupons that will make the most impact. Each one guaranteed $100 in value on an existing handset if you trade it in for a HTC One. Anyone leaving the event not overly impressed with the Galaxy S4 had an added incentive to choose the HTC One using that scrunched up coupon in their pocket.
